The Sage Spectrum C Review

When I tested the Sage Spectrum C it was partly due to testing a fly rod. Moonshine Rods sent me the Drifter II so I could review it. You can check out that review here. When I received the rod, I had a choice. I could throw an old reel on it, or I could get a new toy. For this test I chose the new toy option because, well, I wanted to. I was also curious about a couple reels in the price range.

There are many reels in the price range of the Sage Spectrum C. I chose the Sage due to availability mostly. At the time, my local shops did not have many 7wt reels. I put my hands on 4 reels and chose the Spectrum C due to the combination of the quality feel, as well as the clean looks.

How Does The Spectrum Feel

To put it simply, it just feels good. There is a very nice feel overall. It feels sturdy and strong, the matte coating ads just the slightest texture. While keeping a very clean look. Changing spools, adjusting drag, pulling line, and reeling all feel great.

What Does Sage Say About The Spectrum C

According to Sage this is how they describe it. “Multi-purpose reels built to cover the entire range of fly fishing applications from Brook trout to Tarpon. Every reel utilizes Sage’s exclusive SCS Drag package tuned per size to match fishing application. One revolution drag knob featured throughout the series allows for ease of adjustment and reliable, consistent, repeatable drag pressure.

The SPECTRUM C features a large arbor with rugged machined die-cast frame and generous concave vented spool. Equipped with the SPECTRUM Family One Revolution Sealed Carbon Drag and unexpected finishing touches like its fully machined drag knob and handle. The SPECTRUM C gives you more than the fish bargained for.” You can see more from Sage here.

How Does the Spectrum C Perform

I have been really happy with the reel. I’ve had no problems and I’m overall pretty impressed. The functionality is top notch. One of the major downsides to a lot reels is the drag system. If you’re going after 6 inch trout on a 3wt, it’s not a concern. As I mentioned, I put this reel on a 7wt. Big Trout, big Bass, Stripers, and Muskie will work a cheap drag system. The Sage Spectrum C handles it perfectly. Every click in the drag adjustment is different. Many (mostly cheap) reels don’t have much of a difference between 3 and 9. The Sage has a noticeable change in drag at every level. It can be as light as just above free spool. It can also be cranked down till it is difficult to backspin by hand. The drag on this reel will handle damn near anything.

Should You Buy The Sage Spectrum C

Absolutely! I have more testing to do before I call this “The Best Fly Reel For Under $200”, but so far it has been exceptional. The Spectrum C comes in every size from 3wt to 10wt, and costs between $165 and $185 with extra spools in the $80 – $90 range. It is versatile, performs perfectly and looks great doing it! This reel is at a perfect price point for many. It would make a great “1st nice reel” or a great backup. It also will make a great gift for that fly fishing junkie in your life.

In conclusion, this real is a great option for everybody. I am very pleased with it’s performance, and I’m sure you will be too.
